CCH - City, Community and Heritage: Culture Mapping as an approach for Integrated Urban Regeneration and Heritage Conservation strategies
Within the framework of the German-Egyptian Progress Partnership Program Line 1: University Partnerships 2021-2022, the Department of Urban Renewal and Planning Theory of the University of Kassel in cooperation with the Department of Fine Arts - Department of Architecture - of the University of Alexandria in Egypt has initiated the project Kassalex - CCH - City, Community and Heritage: Culture Mapping as an Approach for Integrated Urban Regeneration and Heritage Conservation Strategies. The project runs from January 2021 to the end of 2022 and is concerned with deepening cooperation with Alexandria University in Egypt through the organization and implementation of various forms of academic and student exchanges.
The project builds on the results of a previous collaboration that took place in Egypt in 2018 between the two universities in the fields of 'urban regeneration' and 'heritage preservation' in the form of a ten-day workshop. Following the footsteps of this workshop, the project proposal was conceived with the aim of applying 'Culture Mapping' as an urban planning tool in two cities, namely Northeim in Germany and Alexandria in Egypt, to describe resources and assets, identify networks of a community, and plan urban renewal processes. Therefore, the expected research outcomes of this project are the mapping of cultural heritage and the development of a comprehensive proposal for a strategic framework of urban regeneration and heritage conservation in both cities.
